This composition is probably the most popular one of the equine works. I’ve painted it many times and never get tired of it since each one seems to be different in palette and size. The client discovered my work online and has followed me for quite some time. She finally saved enough money to commission me to do an original painting. The biggest reward of being an artist is being able to connect with people that I’ve never met through my paintings.

Okay, so the derby is right around the corner and it’s time to go crazy with some horse art. This piece is a combination of thin acrylic washes and artist grade crayon. If you’re new to the website then you should know that Robert is the Official Artist of the 2012 Kentucky Derby and i love to paint horses. Not much else to say about this one except I kinda’ like it.

Inspiration Behind The Cow Art

Still exploring the new batch of acrylic colors and new crayons. I highly suggest to all artists to experiment as much as possible with new colors and mediums. Why? Because i breeds new combinations and undiscovered techniques. A fabulous way to spice up the session. I’ve been out of yellow for about a month and it’s been refreshing to have it back in the arsenal. It amazing what new colors you can create with lemon yellow and it’s a primary source of inspiration in this piece.

Details About This Painting

This is the official painting for the 2012 Kentucky Oaks. And today you get a special treat. I spent hours in the studio coming up with what I felt was a fantastic and unique artistic representation of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks. Once I knew what I wanted and the composition was approved by Jett Stream Productions and the Churchill Downs Marketing department, I went to work. And I also set-up the video camera so that I could capture the painting process and share it with you.

You’ll also have the opportunity to view the making of the Kentucky derby video very soon. Hope you enjoy it.

Inspiration Behind The Art

After browsing some photos of last years vacation to Stonington, Maine I decided to create some art that reminded me of one of my favorite towns in the US.

You’ll also notice that I pre-framed the canvas so that I could use the frame as part of the painting surface. This is something new I’ve been exploring this year and really like the way it adds to the looseness of the artwork. It’s always exciting to try something different in the studio to keep things interesting!

Inspiration Behind The Artwork

After receiving a new supply of art materials it was time to use em’ up. Included in the new batch of stuff were several colors that I’ve never used before. Sometimes inspiration comes in new materials to work with, so this piece was all about getting acquainted with the new colors.I ordered the colors online and I picked them out by closing my eyes and pointing to the screen. Whatever color I pointed to was the color I ordered. See, art doesn’t have to be predictable.

I get a lot of questions about my paint, palette and brushes. I thought I would make a short video that may answer some of those questions. Please feel free to leave a comment if there’s any other questions you may have.

Details About my Materials

Inexpensive synthetic brushes. Why? Because I’m very hard on my brushes and see no need to purchase expensive ones. I rotate my brushes every week so that I don’t settle into a rut. One brush that’s a staple is my liner brush. I have several different brands/sizes and rotate them as well.

I prefer Matisse and Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics. The Matisse brands are purchased through jerrysartorama.com

I use a large glass palette in the studio. Why? Because it’s easy to clean and I like the way the paint feels on this surface as opposed to a wooden palette. I use a paper palette when in the field because they’re disposable.

The crayons I use are water soluble Caran d’Ache. The mix well with watercolors and acrylics but are much more cost effective than most pastels. I order these from dickblick.com since they offer them individually versus buying a set with colors that I don’t use.
