In this acrylic and collage video demonstration I will create an abstract style landscape on canvas. This is a step-by-step tutorial that includes many ideas and methods for painting expressive artwork.
You will find my method to be very direct! Paint is extracted right from the jars and applied immediately to the canvas. The decisions and actions are quick. But make no mistake that a lot of thought is invested in the design before the painting begins.
I have a fantastic, in-depth online design and composition course for fine artists if you are interested in learning more.
The big misconception
If you have been around for a while you have heard me say this. But no matter how many times I do it seems to be easily forgotten. But here it goes again...
Many artists, especially newbies, think painting loose is nothing more than grabbing some paint and a few brushes and start slinging like a madman. This couldn't be any further from the truth. An approach like that will typically end in disappointment.
Been there, done that!
Much of what I teach is all about understanding how to blend quality fundamentals with expressive painting techniques.
I've found over the years that it's the best approach for having success. I'm also a believer in building solid drawing, design and composition skills. Without these I find the artwork will always lack that lovely finished quality that entices the viewer to look deeper and closer into the painting.
Confidence in creating art is achieved just like any other endeavor. One needs knowledge, technique, and experience. There are no shortcuts so if you want to paint loose art I suggest you build your foundation!
