Abstract Rooster Painting Details

Abstract rooster painting features energetic compressed charcoal scribble with layers of thick acrylic paint. I started the art with a quick gestural sketch of the rooster and started building the layers with thin layers of acrylics. I kept adding layers of paint and each one was thicker than the previous. These thin layers give the painting and subject a nice base and the thicker layers add texture and depth to the overall finish.

The gestural sketch also acts as the glue that holds everything together. Without this under-sketch that piece would probably fall apart. I love it when every scribble and stroke are useful and visible in the final painting. Nothing is wasted and the painting can breathe without looking overpainted. I think I nailed it on this one!
