Applying Acrylics Like A Pro

Applying Acrylics Like A Pro

This lesson will teach you the art of applying acrylics. Yes, there is an art to it and you will gain the valuable knowledge of creating more fluid strokes of acrylics once you have viewed this lesson.

By nature heavy body acrylics are stiff since they are so thick. So it’s important to know what type of stroke you want/need and prepare your paint accordingly. This basic understanding can easily make or break a painting.

What You Need To Know

Refer to the demo image above to see if you can spot the points below. The left side is applied with dry brush while the right is wet. See the difference?

  • Applying dry paint versus wet/watered down acrylics
  • Using pressure into the surface to create a long fluid stroke
  • Create dynamic and rich acrylic brushwork versus weak somewhat dull strokes

Your Goal

Practice applying acrylics on scrap sheets of paper, or rejects. Try it over and over until you understand the difference between using undiluted and diluted acrylics. Note how easy the paint comes off the brush when diluted. This allows you the freedom to paint longer strokes and larger blocks of color.

Experiment with using pressure into your surface. Vary the degrees of pressure and understand the energy a painting can have when you apply the paint with pressure – a great way to understand the art of creating expressive works.
