Mixing Area - Palette Size

Having the right size palette can easily eliminate muddy paintings.

A few points:

  1. Smaller palettes obviously present problems from the get-go because you are very limited with mixing space. If you have to work with a small palette try using a limited palette of colors so you have less margin for error.
  2. Medium sized palettes works well so long as you do not crowd the mixing area. Try to place the paint towards the outer edges to maximize the available mixing area.
  3. Glass and plexiglass work very well especially if you have a larger studio. You can visit your local framer to see if they have any large size scrap glass, or plexiglass. This type of palette is fairly easy to clean up & provides ample mixing space.
