Race Horse Painting
Race Horse Painting Details
Since the 2013 Kentucky Derby is just around the corner I thought it would be fitting to share my favorite race horse painting. It's inspired from my trip to Churchill Downs in 2012. In case you didn't know, my work was the featured artist of last years derby and my artwork was featured on all programs, tickets, posters and more. While there I took hundreds of photos that have inspired horse racing artwork such as this one.
This beauty is painted over a reject painting with a mixed media combination of heavy body acrylics, inks and crayon on archival paper. It measures 16" x 34" and sold quickly. I typically paint with a standard layout and rarely try these long paintings. But it worked quite well for this composition and has me thinking about other ways to use this design. The painting was created in layers and took a few weeks. I do think it's kind of odd since it has a very 'quick' look to it. But most of my work is created this way, I add small adjustments and let the painting rest. I come back to it when the timing is right and I know exactly what I want to do next, and again, small additions. Never trying to actually finish the piece! Over time the painting developed with these layers and eventually became a keeper!
