Race Horse Painting
About The Race Horse Painting
This race horse painting depicts three horse and jockeys competing for the finish line. I used heavy body acrylics on archival paper, measures 22" x 30" and chocked full of abstract and representational qualities. It's inspired from time spent at the 2012 Kentucky Derby where I was fortunate to be the official artist. I took plenty of photos while there that helped inspire horse racing paintings like this one.
This is probably one of my favorite large race horse paintings to date. It really captures the intensity of the sport. As most of you know horse racing is fast and furious and I tried to bring that to life by using a sense of urgency with how quickly I painted it. This was done by quick brushwork and not allowing my brain to get too involved in the decision process. I went from one color to the next and changed brushes whenever I changed colors. This kept the colors crisp and saved time. I generally will wash out, or rinse my brush in-between colors so I decided to simply discard them to the side this time and grab a new one. This kept me slinging paint until I my eyes were satisfied.
