Urban Sketching Video Demonstration

In this urban sketching video demonstration I will use Copic markers to depict a corner store in downtown Richmond, Virginia. It's intended to inspire you to get out a sketch your town, or city. There's major potential & subject matter everywhere around you. I feel artists tend to stay in a comfort zone and miss out on subjects that could easily inspire their art. That's what I hope this demo does for you.

What You Need To Know

Creating successful art requires skills and the right combination of medium and subjects. I do feel subjects are often overlooked as many artists fall into the trap of just wanting to paint a finished piece. So, the mentality is just give me a photo and I'll copy it. Bad idea!!! Subjects are right up there with skills and experience. I always teach artists to develop their skills by painting subjects that they have a connection to so that the art becomes more than what it actually is in real life. For example I have three years experience working on commercial fishing boats. I also love football and have lived in rural areas with cow farms. If you look at my portfolio you will see I paint these subjects often. And when I do there's an emotional connection that others would not feel since they haven't walked in my shoes.

By spending time getting to know your area you will begin to make art that reflects your life experiences. And your art will respond accordingly. Now get out there and sketch something!

Plus they inspire finished works of art like what you see below.
